Joe Vogler and the Alaskan Independence Party
In my previous post you will find a Youtube video of Sarah Palin warmly addressing the Alaskan Independence Party. Also it has been reported that she had been a member. What sort of organization is this and what is its history?
The AIP was founded by one Joe Vogler, who seems to be a rightwinger from way back. Margaret Van Cleve spoke with Joe Vogler on March 29, 1991. In the first clip of this interview he explains why he came to Alaska in the first place: he was opposed to the American entry into the second World War after Pearl Harbor. Vogler calls President Franklin Roosevelt a "dirty rotten son-of-a-bitch of a Communist traitor."
In clip 18 he explains why he considers himself an Alaskan rather than an American: "The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government and I won't be buried under their damned flag...and when Alaska is an independent nation they can bring my bones home to be buried in my country."
In clip 19 he states: "Is America destined for the trash bin? I think so, the trash bin of history."
The website of the AIP quotes Vogler: "I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions."

Thanks for the illuminating comment... Just so you know, I commented on it at my blog and linked to your diary here.
By the time I arrived in Fairbanks in 1995, Vogler was dead but the signs seeking help into his sudden and mysterious disappearance were still plastered-up through-out the Tanana Valley. While I knew what had happened to him (shot dead by a delusional “artist” looking to purchase explosives from Vogler) there was so much still to learn about who he was and why a Kansas farmboy turned attorney fled to the Territory of Alaska in 1943, ultimately becoming a gold mining and resource/land development legend through-out Alaska. I set out to answer the why but with any “larger-than-life” figure (even in a small state) my answer never came.
I discovered a racist with delusions of grandeur, prone to paranoia, but uncommonly well-read and highly self-reliant. He was (and remains today) an enigma.
