Professor Juan Cole quotes Ray Close, a retired CIA analyst of Arab affairs:
"Despite vehement official assertions to the contrary, indications are increasing every day that the Bush Administration has already decided that conventional diplomacy will fail as a way to manage its confrontation with Iran, and that military action against the Teheran regime has therefore already reached the point of final countdown.
This bombastic and posturing style of “diplomacy” is going to lead inescapably to one or the other of the following results: 1. War with Iran (with negative consequences beyond anyone's ability to imagine); or 2. Another humiliating demonstration of impotence."I'm hoping for option 2, but fear Bush will go with 1.

Gary,
you're hoping for option 2.
well first of all, i'm sure there are other options or outcomes.
secondly, i appreciate you're honesty in expressing your hatred for your country, but it disgusts me none the less.
another humiliating demonstration of impotence? well we've had a few of those, but not since Bush took office. Like it or not he has struck our enemy repeatedly and he has retaliated for every unprovoked attack. no soldiers are being dragged through the streets of mogadishu or anywhere else while W is in office, that's for sure!
I would rather see Bush humiliated than "negative consequences beyond anyone's ability to imagine." The war in Iraq is a failure. The war in Lebanon was a failure. Iran will be a catastrophe for America.President Bush is a catastrophe for America.
So a free democracy in the middle east is a failure?
The war in Lebanon is Israels war not ours, but it was a failure. It was a failure because Israel didn't finish it, and i will guarantee you right now that it will prompt both hezbollah AND the palestinians to attack again, and they will be bolder.
Iran is the next logical step, and i hope this guy is right that the president is going there next.
Iran, I am afraid, is the next logical step in the insane logic of the Bush administration. Iraq is a disaster, Lebanon a failure, so like a gambler that keeps doubling his bets every time he loses, they will attack Iran.
This guy, by the way, has some serious credentials and he thinks attacking Iran will be a catastrophe. How do you know he's wrong?
